The System

The Province of Mantua instituted the Sistema dei Musei e dei Beni Culturali Mantovani –  the System of Mantuan Museums and Cultural Heritage – on 9 March 2004 with the council resolution number 9.
The process had started in 2002 with the Guide to Mantuan Museums, which tried to promote a cultural heritage which was not yet known enough.
The Province has always been inspired by collaboration among the several museums; its slogan was “working together to work better”.
The system was born in 2004 as an agreement between the Province of Mantua and the institutions and organizations interested in. During the first year the Province of Mantua gave credit and trained even the less equipped organizations, so that the project could mean development for everybody. Still, the Regional Board of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation supported the project and was a fundamental help to organize the system. Today public institutions and private museums and collections may join the system; of course, they must fulfil the law requirements and guarantee weekly openings.
